Genicular Artery Embolization

Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a progressive degenerative joint disease and the most common form of arthritis affecting the weight-bearing joints. Genicular artery embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive, catheter-based procedure in which an embolic agent is delivered through the genicular arteries to occlude abnormal neovascular vessels associated with synovial inflammation, with the goal of reducing chronic knee pain. GAE has been investigated as a treatment option for individuals with symptomatic knee OA who have not responded to conservative management and who are not candidates for, or prefer to defer, total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
