Bless you!
With the arrival of spring, it is very common to hear someone sneezing. Seasonal allergies (also known as hay fever or allergic rhinitis) are a reaction of our immune system to triggering agents (allergens) during a specific time of the year.
The allergens that cause allergies vary each season depending on where you live. The main allergy triggers in spring include pollen from trees, grass, or weeds. In Puerto Rico, we also see an increase in airborne mold spores. Due to climate change, higher temperatures are extending the pollen season. Atmospheric phenomena like heat waves or storms can trigger or worsen allergy symptoms.
Some symptoms you may experience include:
- Nasal congestion and runny nose
- Itchy nose
- Sneezing
- Watery, red, or swollen eyes
- Itchy throat or eyes
- Difficulty breathing
Although we cannot completely avoid allergies, reducing exposure to potential triggers is important. Here are some recommendations to help manage allergies:
Reduce your exposure to triggers:
- Stay indoors on dry and windy days.
- Remove outdoor clothing and shower to eliminate pollen from your skin and hair.
- Avoid hanging clothes outside to dry.
- Wear a mask outdoors, especially when pollen levels are high.
Other useful tips:
- Check pollen and mold spore levels using an app or weather report.
- Keep doors and windows closed during the day or night if pollen levels are high.
- Avoid outdoor activities in the morning when pollen levels peak.
- Keep the indoor air clean by using air conditioning in your home or car.
- Vacuum floors regularly.
- Follow your doctor’s recommendations for this season.
It is important to consult your doctor before taking any medication for seasonal allergies. Identifying the specific cause of your allergies can help you prevent exposure and treat your reactions effectively. A specific allergy blood test can often confirm which type of pollen you are allergic to.
Some medications that may help relieve symptoms include:
- Antihistamines
- Decongestants
- Nasal sprays
- Nasal saline rinses
Although allergies can be very bothersome, they can be managed. Identify what triggers your symptoms, visit your doctor, and prepare for the season. By getting ready before the symptoms start, we can enjoy spring and all seasons!
