Since the 2020 pandemic, we have been spending more time at home and have come to appreciate the importance of nurturing a positive life together. This contributes to a healthy home, which includes clean, tidy, and comfortable living spaces. Such an environment protects your emotional well-being, creating a safe and nurturing atmosphere.

Whether you work outside the home or remotely, consider these tips to maintain a good mood in your living space:

1. Cleanliness and Order

Cleanliness and order go hand in hand. A tidy home makes cleaning easier and helps you avoid pest infestations and pollutants. Additionally, simple decor facilitates maintenance.

2. Ventilation

Just like people, homes need fresh air. Proper ventilation boosts respiratory health by reducing the concentration of volatile organic compounds, eliminating airborne bacteria, and regulating humidity levels. Open your windows for better airflow and replace your air conditioning filters every 3 to 6 months.

3. Lighting

Natural light makes your home feel more spacious. Sunlight enhances cardiovascular health, stimulates the immune system, helps regulate your circadian rhythm, and improves your mood. To maximize natural light, open your windows and consider using skylights. Use LED bulbs, which are healthier for your eyes and more energy-efficient. Remember to illuminate stairwells and hallways to prevent accidents.

4. Comfort and Accessibility

Invest only in essential furniture. A more open space reduces the risk of falls and enhances comfort at home. Keep items accessible or within reach, and label them to promote physical and mental well-being.

5. Avoid Pests

Humidity can create a favorable environment for fungi, mites, cockroaches, and rodents, which can trigger asthma. Seal cracks and crevices, store food properly, and eliminate excess moisture. Certain plants can also help purify the air.

6. Temperature

Fluctuations in temperature can make you more susceptible to respiratory illnesses and other health issues. In Puerto Rico, we experience a summer-like climate year-round. Maintain a cool environment with fans, open windows, or air conditioning, especially during the hotter months.

7. Smoke-Free Environment

Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors to alert you during emergencies. Avoid smoking inside or near your home to reduce the risk of lung-related issues and other health conditions.

8. Safety and Preparedness

Every home should be ready for environmental challenges. Prepare for power outages and keep your belongings organized to avoid accidents. Eliminate standing water containers to reduce the risk of dengue fever. Use power generators safely, ensuring they are positioned outside. Stock up on water and non-perishable food items.

You are the heart of your home!

Don’t let your home overwhelm you; maintain a functional routine with your family to foster a healthy living environment. Together, you can contribute to both physical and emotional well-being.
